Buffalo Bills coach Doug Marrone told a Buffalo radio station Monday that he will turn to Thad Lewis to start at quarterback.
Since rookie EJ Manuel is expected to miss at least a month with a right knee injury, Marrone will give Lewis a shot Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel is the only other quarterback on the roster but Marrone decided to go with Lewis, who will be promoted from the practice squad.
"Thad gives us the best chance," Marrone told WGR 550. "We're going to give him an opportunity to see what he has."
Tuel relieved Manuel when he was injured during Thursday night's loss to the Cleveland Browns. Tuel was eight of 20 for 80 yards with an interception.
The Bills got the 25-year-old Lewis in a trade with the Detroit Lions in late August. Lewis, undrafted out of Duke in 2010, started once for the Cleveland Browns last season.
The Bills worked out Pat White and Dennis Dixon on Sunday, according to ESPN. The team decided not to sign either player.
White is reportedly scheduled to work out for the Oakland Raiders Tuesday after they missed out on Josh Freeman. The Minnesota Vikings agreed to a deal with Freeman Sunday night. Freeman was released by the Tampa Buccaneers last week
