Ron Rolston can remove the "interim" label from his name plate with the Buffalo Sabres, who announced Rolston as their head coach Tuesday.
Rolston, who replaced Lindy Ruff with 31 games to play, with a reputation for excellence in player development with the Rochester Americans of the AHL, led the team to a15-11-5 record since taking over Feb. 20.
Ruff coached the Sabres for 16 seasons and was with the franchise for a decade as a player.
Buffalo missed the postseason for the second consecutive season and has only two playoff appearances in the past six seasons.
General manager Darcy Regier was impressed with the effort of the Sabres late in the season, especially after dealing away team captain Jason Pominville.
Before his two seasons at Rochester, Rolston won three gold medals as head coach of USA Hockey's Under-18 team
