 Overview

Though Cincinnati's tight ends rarely earn the hype of their wideouts, the Bearcats are quietly developing a reputation as a producer of NFL talent at this position.

Travis, the younger brother of former Bearcat and current Philadelphia Eagle offensive guard Jason Kelce, looked like a future star while splitting time between tight end and Wildcat quarterback as a freshman, but ruined his chances at building on his early momentum by being suspended for the entire 2010 season for an undisclosed violation of team rules.

Though Adrien Robinson, who was selected in the fourth round this past April by the Super Bowl defending New York Giants, started ahead of Kelce in 2011, Kelce saw significant playing time and actually finished with one more catch (13) than Robinson.

 Analysis

Strengths: Balanced athlete with better wheels than expected, accelerating quickly to top speed. Deceiving quickness after the catch with loose hips and a fluid and flexible frame. Smooth and patient in his routes to release and gain separation. Catches the ball with his hands and does a nice job working back to the ball. Strong hands at the point of attack as a blocker and plays with a mean streak to eliminate defenders. Aggressive and feisty blocker who loves to finish, showing good awareness in this area to pick up his assignment and block anyone around him. Led the Bearcats in receiving in 2012 and more than tripled his career production. Works hard in the weight room and plays with NFL intensity. NFL bloodlines as the younger brother of Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce.

Weaknesses: Needs to stay under control in his movements and sometimes moves too fast for his own good. His focus can be hot/cold at times, running before securing the catch. Still new to the position after being recruited to Cincinnati as a quarterback and needs some technique work as a blocker. Has only one season as a starter. Missed all of the 2010 season due to a violation of team rules and his character needs to be investigated.

Compares To: Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Detroit Lions - Kelce flashes the ability to be an impact blocker and receiver at the next level, but like the Detroit Lions' Brandon Pettigrew, he will likely need some time to adapt at the NFL.

 2012 Season

Kelce was one of the top tight ends in the country in 2012, earning First-Team All-BIG EAST honors and finishing as UC's leading receiver with 45 catches for 722 yards and eight scores. He set the UC single-season mark for receptions, yards receiving and touchdowns by a tight end. He caught the game winner in the 2012 Belk Bowl, hauling in an 83-yarder down the seam from QB Brendon Kay with under a minute left in the game. It was the longest scoring play and TD pass in Belk Bowl history.

 Draft Scout Player News
04/29/13 - A closer look at the Chiefs' picks: Round 3/63 - Travis Kelce, TE, 6-5, 260, Cincinnati...The former high school quarterback is just developing as a tight end, but he can catch and he can block well enough to get plenty of snaps in coach Andy Reid's offense. The Chiefs say they aren't concerned about his 2010 suspension for a positive drug test. - The Sports Xchange
04/25/13 - DANE BRUGLER'S FINAL 2013 DRAFT BOARD: 30. TE Travis Kelce, Cincinnati (6-5, 255, 5SR)...The younger brother of Eagles center Jason Kelce, Travis Kelce is the top senior tight end in this class, with the strength and speed to be a consistent receiving and blocking threat. - Dane Brugler, NFLDraftScout.com
04/24/13 - 2013 NFL DRAFT RANG'S GANG: TE: Travis Kelce, Cincinnati, 6-5, 250, 4.64...Kelce signed (and played, at times) with the Bearcats as a quarterback and served as the backup to Adrien Robinson (now a member of the New York Giants) so his only season as Cincinnati's starting tight end was in 2012. As such, he's raw and comes with some baggage as he was suspended for the entire 2010 season. Other than top-rated tight end Tyler Eifert, however, Kelce possesses the most intriguing upside of this year's class, boasting size, athleticism, ball skills and physicality. - Rob Rang, NFLDraftScout.com
04/08/13 - 2013 Cincinnati Pro Day: Injuries limit certain players at Cincinnati Pro Day...A total of 16 players from Cincinnati worked out at pro day on March 13 along with five others from nearby schools. There were 32 NFL teams represented and the workouts were held indoors on field-turf. Travis Kelce TE (6-5, 258 pounds) - He is not going to work out. He was injured and instead will work out April 4 at Woodward High School in Cincinnati. Florida State defensive lineman Tank Carradine also will take part in that workout. - Gil Brandt, NFL.com
04/08/13 - Travis Kelce unable to do complete workout after getting sick...Unable to participate in Cincinnati’s pro day on March 13 due to a sports hernia, Travis Kelce - one of the top-rated tight ends in the 2013 NFL Draft class - held an individual workout in Cincinnati on Thursday. Kelce, who is the No. 4-rated tight end according to Mike Mayock and the No. 69-rated player in my Hot 100 prospect rankings, worked outdoors on FieldTurf in chilly 43-degree temperatures. There were 12 teams present, including four tight end coaches, and Cincinnati Bengals coach Marvin Lewis and part of his coaching staff.

Kelce (6-foot-5 1/4, 250 pounds) ran the 40-yard dash in 4.62 and 4.65 seconds. He had a 35-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot-4 broad jump. He did the short shuttle in 4.47 seconds and the three-cone drill in 7.12 seconds. Due to the sports hernia injury, I’m told that the scouts on hand didn’t think Kelce was in optimum condition for the workout. He got sick after running his 40s, and did not run any routes. He was able to catch passes while in a stationary position during the workout. Kelce - who was invited to the NFL Scouting Combine - was also not able to go through workouts while in Indianapolis. - Gil Brandt, NFL.com
